Dentures are an option if you have lost multiple teeth. These are artificial teeth and gums created by our dentist to replace your missing teeth. Dentures are made of an artificial tooth and supporting structure. At Zenith Smiles we use both porcelain and plastic dentures. However, dentures wear down with time as they are weaker than natural teeth. Therefore, you may need to get a new set of dentures in about five years. Dentures will improve your appearance by maintaining the structure of your mouth. Dentures will also enhance functionality, allowing you to eat and speak properly.
We offer two types of dentures, which include complete and partial dentures. Partial dentures are right if you have teeth remaining in your upper or lower jaw. We use a bridge to replace the missing teeth. We attach the artificial teeth to your remaining natural teeth on either side of the space. Apart from filling the empty spaces, partial dentures prevent the remaining teeth from shifting and changing positions. They are removable and should have a natural look.
Complete dentures are installed eight to 12 weeks after your teeth have been pulled out. We use them to replace a full row of missing teeth. Our team may decide to extract multiple teeth if they are damaged or decayed beyond repair. After the procedure, you will be more confident in your appearance. You will also regain functionality after healing.
The first step is to ensure that your gums and soft tissues are healthy. We will give you a complete examination, including x-rays. The denture-making process begins by making a mold of the spaces. We will also involve you in determining elements like the size, shape, and color of the new teeth. On the second visit, we will ensure that the denture is an ideal fit. We use a loose-fitting denture to test the position of the tooth. During the third visit, we will replace the wax dentures with the final one. We also adjust the appearance and size of the dentures accordingly. On the fourth visit, you leave with a complete set of new dentures.
Regardless of the type of dentures you get, you need to clean them daily. Like natural teeth, they are susceptible to bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Besides, any buildup could harm your remaining teeth and gums. When cleaning them, run clean water over them to remove food particles. Then, brush your dentures using a soft toothbrush and mild soap, or alternatively use a denture cleaner. Avoid using regular toothpaste or an electric toothbrush as they can damage your dentures. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning. Also, clean your gums and natural teeth with a soft toothbrush or soft washcloth.
Remove your dentures before going to bed to avoid damaging or dislodging them. This way, you also let the gums relax. Submerge them in warm water to help retain moisture. Do not soak them in hot water as they will lose shape.
