Dental Crown

Crowns are a versatile restoration. A crown is a cap designed to protect a damaged tooth. Crowns installed on your front teeth are designed to match your other teeth. However, a crown over a molar rarely shows. Here at Zenith Smiles we also use crowns to replace missing teeth. In this case, our dentist will insert an artificial root into the jawbone. The root will support and hold the crown in place. When you visit us, our dentist will help determine whether installing a crown will meet your needs.

WHEN ARE CROWNS INSTALLED?

Our dentist may consider installing a crown to meet the different needs of our patients. For instance, if you have a cavity that is too big to repair with a filling procedure, you may need a crown. We also install crowns when your tooth is severely worn out. Your teeth may wear down from exposure to acidic substances, or from clenching and grinding. Our dentist may also recommend similar treatment if your tooth is cracked or weak. We also recommend crowns after you have undergone a root canal. After the procedure, your tooth is fragile. It needs extra support and protection.

If you are missing a tooth, you also need a dental crown. Our dentist will restore your natural appearance without detracting from your smile. You may also be a candidate for a crown if our dentist needs to install a dental bridge or tooth implant. In this case, the crown will support the bridge or provide the external-facing piece for your implant.

TYPES OF CROWNS

Our dentist will discuss these options with you to help figure out the most ideal type of crown for you. The first option is ceramic crowns. These are metal-free and are the best choice if you are allergic to any type of metal. They are also appropriate if you are looking to improve the size, shape, or color of teeth. The other option is porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. These have a metal base with porcelain fused over the top. Another popular choice is metal dental crowns. They are made of metal and have a metallic appearance. They are ideal if you are looking to replace your molars since they are very strong.

You may also opt for gold crowns, which are suitable for the replacement of molars. Stainless steel is your best option for a temporary crown. As you wait for your permanent crown, stainless steel will alleviate the risk of bacteria and decay entering the treatment area.

CROWN PLACEMENT PROCESS

Placing a dental crown will take more than one visit to our office. First, our dentists will treat your tooth by removing any decay. Next, we will take a mold of your tooth. The mold will guide us in designing a crown that fits the damaged area. Then, we will fit a temporary crown that will protect the treatment area until we make the permanent one. In the meantime, you should avoid hard and sticky foods as they loosen the temporary crown. Your permanent crown should be ready in one to two weeks.
